It’s generally thought that 1 in 5 all people experience a nightmare at least once a week.

In itself, that’s not a pleasant thought, even without having to experience the nightmare itself.

So if you’re constantly waking up in the middle of the night covered in sweat after your dreams have turned into a nightmare, is there anything you can do to cut down your nightmares?

1. Check your medication

It’s possible that the medicine you’re taking includes nightmares as one of its side effects. If you’ve just started a new drug, then it could well be causing your nightmares. Go back to your doctor and change your medicine if necessary.

2. Learn to relax

Quite often, nightmares are just our body’s way of telling us that we’re totally stressed. OK, it would be nice if your body didn’t tell you this by giving you nightmares but then there’s a good chance you’d ignore gentler signals. Download a relaxation track and play it in the background. If certain things in your life are causing you to stress out, work on ways to move them out of your life or at least cut down their effect.

3. Reduce your caffeine intake

I know, blame the coffee as usual. There’s no need to cut it out cmopletely from your life. But don’t slurp down lots of coffee or other caffeinated drinks too close to bedtime. It’s not just the usual suspects, some pain killers include caffeine, so check the label and change brand if necessary.

4. Get a good night’s sleep

Sure, that sounds like a contradiction in terms. I mean, you’re having nightmares and that’s not exactly helping you get decent sleep. Begin by making your bedtime a routine rather than a different time each night.

5. Use hypnosis to help

Because your mind is working overtime, constructing all those different nightmares in an effort to see how scared you can get, hypnosis is an excellent way to sort it out. You can download a simple hypnosis MP3 which will help eradicate your nightmares. Give it a try - you’ll be glad you did.
